Hand made in Kenya

Sandstorm products are hand made in Kenya to the highest specification. Each item is cut from robust 18oz 100% cotton canvas that has been specially treated to make it water-resistant. And every piece of leather has been finished using the 'pull-up' technique to give it a worn appearance that actually improves with age. Double stitched stress points and solid brass fittings complete the Sandstorm specification.

All the products are hand made by skilled craftsmen. Most of the workers are Luo tribesmen who come from an area known as the Lake Basin the Kenya side of Lake Victoria. This is the second biggest lake in the world which is at 3000 feet above sea level and borders three countries Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The land surrounding the lake is lush agricultural land, but fishing is the predominant income earner for the communities living around the lake. The Luo tribe place strong emphasis on family values and live in close knit communities. They are very neat in appearance and attire which is reflected in their work. They have nimble fingers so are particularly good at stitching and are very pedantic in their work, maintaining close attention to detail and immaculate finish. This probably harks back to their heritage of repairing fishing nets around Lake Victoria.
